AvoJam

OVERVIEW

AvoJam is the concept for an app targeted at musical enthusiasts who want to connect through their passion. The app helps users meet like-minded people and jam in groups with them, eventually to form a band together. I worked on AvoJam as my final project in my intensive UX/UI program at Spiced Academy.

Research

During our research, which consisted in a questionnaire and some user interviews a consistent problem emerged: finding people to jam with is hard. Many players struggle to connect with others who share similar styles, inspiration and/or creative energy. In the end, we found some valuable insights that inspired our design choices.

Insights

  1. Provide strong filtering and detailed profiles for good matches.

  2. Support both casual jamming and future band formation.

  3. Let people choose the location of where to play.

  1. Give strangers a sense of familiarity and friendliness through chat and profiles.

  2. Focus the app on group-based meetings.

  3. Ensure safety with user verification and throrough detailed profiles.

Wireframes lo-fi

Using our research data as a base, our team proceeded to create an information architecture and then wireframes, to plan the layout and placement of key elements. Using Excalidraw, we mapped out the screens needed to complete two main user flows. In this example, we decided how the registration process would look like.

User flow 1

Antonio just moved to Berlin and wants to make new friends to play music with. He will create a new account in AvoJam and find an existing jam to join based on his musical interests.

User flow 2

Antonio bonded with another person (Paul) at his last jam over shared passion for a specific band. He wants to create a new jam with Paul and invite a drummer as well to play some covers.

Takeaways

An important takeaway we got was to always be open to research feedback, even if it goes against the initial project idea: we discovered, for example, that quite a lot of people are interesting in jamming together and making friends, without forming a band after. This feedback shaped the whole project direction and, in the end, allowed us to design an app more inclusive of different types of users. To proceed with this project we would need to do some user testing, to verify the user-friendliness of our design.

I want to express gratitude to my colleague, Mateusz, and our coaches Vieri Fidanza, and Camila Jatahy for their support and help during the completion of this project.
